Politics is not Reality

A lot of people seem to be freaking out over the John Kerry statement, and that is good. That was the point of the statement, and the intent behind the wording. This wasn't knee jerk reaction, this was taking one out of the Republican playbook. Because you see boys and girls, politics isn't like reality. That is why the right are so good at it. Their tactics work in zero sum worlds.  Politics isn't reality. At the end of a campaign there are winners and losers, and the losers go away. When dealing with global politics and strategy it is important to think about building coalitions even with enemies for a greater good.

But this is politics. Here is what Kerry just accomplished.

Prior to this statement the news cycle would have been Rush Limbaugh and the like taking the ball from Tony Snow and every talk show in the news cycle spending an hour talking about how  Kerry and the Democrats "insulted" the troops.

Kerry just buried that and put a new debate in the cycle. Much like Rush Limbaughs attack on Michael J. Fox stopped people from talking about the issue and switched it to talking about how mean Rush Limbaugh is, we aren't talking about what he mispoke, we are talking about what he said.

And let's hear the right go after him. Go ahead and read that on the air and then try to paint him as a pansy assed flip flopper. I would love to hear "doughy Rush Limbaugh" read that on the air tomorrow.

Yes kids, when we get them into office we want them to be statesmanlike, and not be like republicans. Because as we see from failed Republican policy, you have to consider the consequences of what you say and do, or risk ending up in a quagmire.

But that is for reality. This is a political statement in the middle of political season. He keeps talking like that he's going to be the next president. Sure, it is overly aggressive and devisive, but have you listened to Dubya speak lately? He won twice.

Politics isn't reality. It's a winner take all High School popularity contest. And when the school yard bully calls you a name, the smart move is to walk away if you want to go to college and lead a successful life. But there is no life if you don't win the popularity contest in politics, so you can't walk away from a fight. You have to fight back.

So quit being pansy assed, volvo drivin', sushi eatin' liberals. John said what we were thinking, but were too "rational" to say. Because he finally realized politics aren't rational, and it's about damn time.
